PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Child tax credit payments are expected to start going out to over 115,00 eligible Rhode Island families the first week of October.
“We know for working Rhode Islanders who are feeling the pinch with rising prices, every dollar matters,” said House Speaker Joseph Shekarchi on Monday.
The program was created for the 2023 FY and was signed by Gov. Dan McKee in June and said the payments went out as soon as possible.
“We’re finding ways to help families work through the impacts of COVID-19, which is exactly what happened,” McKee added.
But his political opponent Ashley Kalus disagreed, saying that the delay was harmful and planned.
“It would have really been helpful for families to have that money to buy school supplies, but what he has done has lined this up with the election season,” Kalus said.
Some Rhode Islanders, like Sean Hughes, said they are just happy some relief is on the way.
“I think it’s good. I think it’s good they’re helping the kids,” said Hughes.
Others, like Susanna Torres aren’t sure by today’s standards this relief check will do much good.
“It should be more than that. Nowadays you can’t even do nothing with $100,” Torres said.
