PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) – The Rhode Island primary is in the books, and the race for governor is now set.
Gov. Dan McKee survived a tough primary challenge from former CVS executive Helena Buonanno Foulkes, and now gets ready to meet Republican Ashley Kalus in the general election.
Kalus is already firing on all cylinders, attacking the governor’s record in an interview with ABC 6 News. And with still two months to go until Election Day on Nov. 8, Kalus said she expects a tough fight.
“This is a fight for the future of Rhode Island,” Kalus said. “What we need is a leader who will invest in the future of Rhode Island. That’s what you’ll get with me. So, the choice I feel for voters is simple. Are we going to be in our old ways of career corrupt politician? I mean, he’s under investigation. We talk about what he’s done in the short period of time that he’s been appointed. He was never elected. He’s under FBI investigation, he’s had scandals, departments, and agencies that have a lack of leadership because he hasn’t filled those posts. We really have a disaster and we can choose change.”
McKee’s campaign has not responded to requests Wednesday morning by ABC 6 to discuss the matchup with Kalus in the November general election.
“We have momentum in our state that we’ve never had before and it took a campaign to actually let people know about it,” McKee told ABC 6 Tuesday night. “We knew when the numbers started to turn that we were in good shape and that we were going to hold onto the lead.”
With that matchup set, the two candidates must now convince voters they are the right person to lead Rhode Island.
For Kalus, she said that starts with keeping young Rhode Islanders in the state and investing in the state’s local economy.
“We’re going to reform the education system. We are going to make Rhode Island the most affordable place to live, work and raise a family,” she said. “Rhode Island can be the blue economy. That’s leveraging our assets. We have everything in this state.”
